Join us October 18th – Astrophotography with Larry Wilson

On October 18 PCC will host Astrophotography – Larry Wilson

I retired from my job with Caterpillar in 2008 and decided to re-engage with my lifelong interest in astronomy and astrophotography. I became interested in the hobby originally in 1958 when one night south of Chillicothe where I grew up, my Dad took me outside pointed up in the dark sky overhead at a slow moving white pinpoint of light. He told me it was a Soviet satellite named Sputnik and one day it would be able to drop bombs on us. From that time onward I was hooked on looking up!

I wanted to be an astronomer and graduated from college in 1969 with a BS Degree in Physics. But due to Viet Nam, I ended up working at Caterpillar for 38 years, raised a family and set aside seriously pursuing my hobby until retirement.

About a year after I retired I discovered that DSLR cameras worked great for astrophotography. I became interested immediately and started learning the hobby all over again. My first results were taken using a Canon Rebel XTi mounted on a tripod. After that I gradually progressed to taking multiple time exposures through a guided telescope and I thoroughly love being back at this hobby again. At my current location at Lake Thunderbird by Putnam, I have a good dark sky to both observe and do photography and just about any clear Illinois evening you can find me out with my cameras and scopes capturing some aspect of the gorgeous scenery overhead!
